Bernhard J. "Benny" Schnack, 85, of Grand Mound, Iowa, died Monday afternoon, February 25, 2013 at ManorCare-Utica Ridge, Davenport, Iowa.

Bernhard Johannes Schnack was born December 22, 1927 in Fleckeby, Germany, to Bernhard Claus and Margareta Magdalena (Gosch) Schnack. He received his education in German Schools and earned a degree in agriculture. Early in his life, Benny worked on the family farm. At age 15, he served in the German military at the end of World War II and was a French Prisoner of War. Benny immigrated to the United States in the early 50's and began his career in farming at rural DeWitt, Iowa, and later at rural Grand Mound. He married Inge Rehm April 16, 1966, in Clinton, Iowa. The couple continued the farming operation until retirement in 1993.

He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church. He loved the land that he farmed and raising livestock. Benny had an extremely focused strong work ethic and was very strong willed. He never would walk if he could run. Benny loved his grandchildren, playing cards and keeping up on world news. He would read the newspaper and U.S. News cover to cover.

Surviving are his wife, Inge; children, Kim (Edwin) Stevens and David (Becky) Schnack of Grand Mound, Steven Schnack of New Jersey, and Lisa (Stephen) Briggs of Maquoketa, Iowa; grandchildren, Lara Schnack, Amy Schnack, Chelsey Schnack, Katie Schnack, Rachel Schnack and Allison Schnack; a sister, Magdalena (Otto) Edert of Bremerhaven, Germany; a brother, Franz Schnack of Davenport, Iowa; other relatives and friends.

Preceding Benny in death were his parents; brothers, Helmuth and Klaus and a sister, Annemarie Lassen.

The family will receive relatives and friends at Schultz Funeral Home, Grand Mound, from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m. Thursday, February 28, 2013. A Service of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, March 1, 2013 at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Grand Mound. The Reverend Steven Anderson will officiate and burial will be at Evergreen Cemetery, Grand Mound.
