Dr. Piper Dies At 84

Dr. E.A. Piper, 84, of DeWitt, formerly of Fairfield, died Monday morning at DeWitt Community Hospital. He served as pastor of the First Lutheran Church here from 1939 to 1958.

Services will be Thursday at 10:30 a.m., at McGinnis Funeral Home in DeWitt with the Rev. Karl Nelson, St. Paul Lutheran Church of Clinton, and Dr. Raymond Lingwall, president of the Iowa Synod LCA, officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery in DeWitt. Visitation will be from 2 until 4 p.m., and 7 until 9 p.m. Wednesday.

Dr. Piper was born in Sharon, Wis., Jan. 9, 1893, the son of Rufus and Clara Peters Piper. He was married to Tena Peterson on June 14, 1923 in Nevada, Iowa. She died in 1973.

He was a retired minister and a past president of the Iowa Synod of United Lutheran Churches of America. He attended Lutheran Theological Seminary at Gettysburg, Pa.

He served pastorates at Webster City, Fairfield, Oxford Junction and Toronto, Iowa. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army during World War I.

He is survived by two daughters, Carol Wolff, Huntington, W.Va., and Peg Doering, Davenport, two sons, the Rev. Edward A. Piper, Beliot, Kan., and the Rev. Donald R. Piper, Silver Spring, Md.; two sisters, Ruth Kinyon, Beloit, Wis., and Margaret Kalb, Sharon, Wis. He was preceded in death by two brothers.
