CLINTON, Iowa — David A. Pottratz, 69, of Clinton, passed away Friday, April 27, 2012 at his home in Clinton surrounded by his loving family.

Mass of the Christian Burial will be 10:30am, Wednesday, May 2, 2012 at Prince of Peace Catholic Church, Clinton. Serving as pallbearers will be Gary LaCourse, Tom Moody, Brian Bopes, Dick DeHaven, Jeff Pottratz, Nick Pottratz. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be Jim Rockwell and Mike Rupp. Visitation will be Tuesday from 4:00-8:00pm at the Clinton Chapel Snell-Zornig Funeral Homes & Crematory. Following the services the body will be cremated. Private family burial will be in the Clinton Lawn Cemetery.

David Alexander Pottratz was born on October 10, 1942 in St. John’s, Newfoundland, Canada, the son of Alvin and Emma (Carter) Pottratz. He was a 1961 graduate of St. Mary’s High School where he played baseball and basketball. He married Margaret “Maggie” Sinksen on September 4, 1965 in Clinton. He later enlisted in the United States Air Force serving during Vietnam from 1967-1971. He graduated from St. Ambrose in 1972.

Dave was a juvenile probation officer for the State of Iowa for 30 years; retiring in 2003. He represented the Juvenile Court on the Clinton County Crime Commission and the Clinton-Jackson County De-categorization Committee. He served on various committees as a member of the Iowa Juvenile Court Services Association. Dave was the initial School Liaison Officer for thirteen school districts, taking services to the schools for the first time.

Dave was a member of Prince of Peace Parish, the Clinton AMVETS, Knights of Columbus St. Edwards Council 707, VFW and Ducks Unlimited. He valued dearly his time hunting and fishing with family and friends. Dave also enjoyed college and professional football – passionately following the Iowa Hawkeyes and Green Bay Packers.

Dave is survived by his wife: Margaret “Maggie” Pottratz of Clinton; two sons: Richard “Rick” Pottratz of Hudson, Wisconsin and Christopher “Chris” (Jennifer) Pottratz of Birmingham, Alabama; 4 grandchildren: Sean, Emily, and Alex Pottratz, and Shyanna Greve; three step-granddaughters: Jordan, Mehgan, and Molly Crawford; and his brother: Stephen (Kathryn) Pottratz of Redding, California and their children Nick, Jeff and Jill.

Dave was preceded in death by his parents and his step-mother: Alice.

Memorials in lieu of flowers can be made to a scholarship fund being established in Dave’s name at Prince of Peace Schools.
