Ruth Feres (Smalley) Baird, 109, was born on August 19, 1902 in Louisville, Kentucky, the daughter of Peter Clay and Norah (Dawson) Smalley. She married George Malcom Baird of Evansville, Indiana, on October 25, 1925. They were married 63 years. She was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother.

She is survived by daughters: Joanne Snodgrass Johnson (Harry) of Morrison, IL, and Virginia (Joe) Phillips of Brownsburg, IN, and a son: Dr. Keith (Joyce) Baird of Crawfordsville, IN; grandchildren surviving are Robert (JoAnn) Snodgrass and Beth (Lon) Rice, Nina (Chuck) Rumfelt all of Morrison and Sue (Jim) Miller of Prophetstown, IL, also grandchildren Kathy Baird Seward (Doug) of Ohio, John Baird (Julie) of Crawfordsville, IN, Jane Baird Weisenbach (Chuck) of Indianapolis, IN, and Dr. Karl Baird (Brenda) of Richmond, Sarah Webb and Anne Webb Gee (Eric) of Bozeman, MT, and John Webb (Deb) of Terra Haute, IN. Surviving also are 11 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren, 12 great-great grandchildren and one great-great-great granddaughter. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, three sisters, two brothers, and a granddaughter: Patricia Snodgrass in infancy and many nieces and nephews.

Ruth was a remarkable woman who touched so many lives. Her love and kindness shown to all who knew her is a legacy that will live on. She loved her children and grandchildren and was an example to all the generations. She was a lady in the true sense of the word. She was a beautiful knitter and made the entire family treasured items. She learned to knit while a high school student for the Doughboys in France.

She resided at Resthave Home in Morrison for many years and most recently at the Alverno in Clinton. She was a longtime member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Evansville, In and a member of St. Anne’s Episcopal Church in Morrison, Il.

A Memorial Mass will be 11:00am, Thursday, January 19, 2012 at St. Anne’s Episcopal Church – Morrison. Visitation will be Wednesday, January 18, 2012 from 4:30pm-5:30pm in the Undercroft at St. Anne’s Episcopal Church. Memorials can be made to the Resthave Home in Morrison or the Alverno in Clinton. The Clinton Chapel Snell-Zornig Funeral Homes & Crematory is assisting the family.
