Mr. Malcolm L. Schroeder, 90, DeWitt, died early Wednesday morning, April 13, 2011 at Westwing Place, DeWitt.

Malcolm Leroy Schroeder was born in Sigourney, Iowa on the family farm, on September 3, 1920, to Elizabeth Hens Schroeder and Henry Schroeder. He graduated from Sigourney High School in 1937. Shortly after moving to De Witt, Malcolm was employed by the Union Pacific Railroad and the Rock Island Arsenal. He volunteered for the United States Navy and served on active duty from October, 1942 until March, 1946. Malcolm was an electrician’s mate on the USS Altamaha CVE-18 escort carrier and on the USS YO-196 fuel oil barge in the South Pacific Theater. Malcolm received the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, the World War II Victory Medal, and the Good Conduct Medal. Upon being honorably discharged, Malcolm returned to De Witt, and began working as an electrician for Alcoa in Riverdale. He retired from Alcoa in 1982, after 35 years of employment. During his retirement, Malcolm delivered cars for D&D Chevrolet.

He married Ruth Adele Simmons in Northwood, Iowa, on August 16, 1947. They enjoyed traveling together, including road trips, tours to Europe, and an around-the-world adventure, which led them through Europe, the Middle East, and Asia.

Malcolm was a member of the American Legion, the IBEW and Grace Lutheran Church where he served as an usher. He enjoyed working on the grounds at Grace Camp.

Preceding Malcolm in death were his parents, his sisters Mary Schroeder Bell and Tina Schroeder Leftwich, and his brother, Leland D. Schroeder.

Surviving are his wife, Ruth; his daughters and their husbands, Mary Schroeder Barber and Dean, Keswick Virginia, Katherine Schroeder Campbell and Ronald, Westfield, Indiana, and Allison Schroeder LaFevers and Jerry, West Plains, Missouri; five grandchildren and their spouses, Leah Campbell Del Rossario, Rachel Campbell, Seth Barry and Amy, Matthew Barry and Callie, and Anne Barber Davis and Steven; and five great-grandchildren, Raquel Del Rossario, Chandler and Indie Barry, and Jade and Chase Barry.

The family will receive relatives and friends at Grace Lutheran Church, DeWitt, from 12 noon until 12:45 p.m. Saturday, April 16, 2011. A Service of Christian Burial will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday in the Church with the Rev. Ronald Rafferty officiating. Military rites by the Eugene McManus American Legion Post #238 and interment will follow at Elmwood Cemetery. In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, memorials may be designated to Grace Lutheran Church.
