Met His Death In A Hayfield. John S. Dannatt Was Accidentally Killed Either In Runaway Or Fall From A Rake. Western Paper Tells Of Clintonite’s Death. Remains of Mr. Dannatt Reach Camanche from Woodbury County Today – Mrs. Barker, Daughter of Deceased Cannot Reach Home for Funeral.
The remains of the late John S. Dannatt reached Camanche today from Woodbury county, where the prominent Clinton county farmer met accidental death Thursday. Mrs. A. P. Barker of this city, daughter of the deceased, who has been in the east, spending the summer at Nantucket, R. I., will not be able to reach Clinton for the funeral and will remain in the east.
It is learned that Mr. Dannatt was accidentally killed in a hay field on his son’s farm in Woodbury county, he having insisted on employing some of his time assisting with the harvesting. A special dispatch to the Sioux City Journal from Bronson, tells of his death in the following:
“The dead body of an old man, the father of E. J. Dannatt, a wealthy rancher of this place, was found in a hay meadow four miles southeast of town at 7 o’clock this evening. In the side of his head was a jagged hole, evidently caused by a blow from some blunt surface. Near by stood a team of mules hitched to a two-horse hay rake which the old man had been driving. His death thought to have resulted from his being overcome with the heat and falling onto the hard metal frame of the rake.
“Mr. Dannatt had left his son’s house at noon, taking the mules to the farthest corner of the meadow to rake hay. He was working under the brow of a hill, which hid him from the view of his son and the foreman of the ranch, who were at work at the other end of the meadow. When he failed to return at supper time William Merrill, ranch foreman, rode over to the gully where he had been working and found his dead body.
“The dead man lived with his wife and one daughter at Camanche, Ia., and had come to Bronson ten days ago to visit his son. The hay crop was large, help was scarce and Mr. Dannatt was strong and hearty in spite of his years. He insisted upon helping with the harvest and had been considered a skillful worker.
The funeral will be held on Sunday afternoon between the hours of 3 and 4 o’clock from the late home in Camanche.
