Don Davis

Don Davis, died on August 10th at his home after a short illness. Born March 10, 1926 in Clinton to Lee C. And Florence Paulsen Davis, and raised primarily by his mother Florence Fenchel and his step-father Julius R. Fenchel. A 1945 graduate of Clinton High School, he married Mary Matthews on May 30, 1948 in Clinton, Iowa. Don served in the Navy during World War II and was attached to the Seebees in Okinawa, Japan where he helped build bases in preparation for the invasion of Japan.

Upon returning home in 1946, Don worked various jobs in Clinton until he started at E.I. DuPont in 1947. He began his career at DuPont as a millwright, eventually finishing his career 38 years later in 1985 as Maintenance Supervisor. In addition to his career at DuPont, Don started a TV antenna and tower installation company in 1950 which he ran until 1965.

Don was always active and busy. As a father of two sons he was active in Clinton Little League, serving as an umpire. Don was also an avid bowler, competing at the national competition in 1955. In his later years he restored antique furniture that he had purchased at auctions. As a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church, Don served as a vestryman, a Junior and Senior warden, and an acolyte Father for many years. Don used his love of yard work to help to keep the Church yard beautiful. He was very proud of his manicured lawn and his bountiful garden, including the tallest tomatoes in Clinton at the time. Don was an avid Cubs fan and hope he would live long enough to see them in the World Series.

He is survived by his wife, Mary, son Terry Davis and daughter-in-law Barb Davis, son Mark Davis, grandson Drew Davis and granddaughter-in-law Jillian Davis, and grandson Duncan Davis. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, parents, step-father, half-brother and his beloved dog Lady Jane.

Visitation for Don will be Thursday, August 12th from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. with services immediately following at the Snell-Zornig Funeral Home in Clinton. Urn burial will be in Springdale Cemetery with military honors being conducted by the Clinton AMVETS post #28.

In lieu of flowers you may send memorials to the Clinton Humane Society, the Iowa Chapter of the Leukemia/Lymphoma Society, or Genesis Hospice.

The family wishes to thank the many friends and family who have provided support as well as the wonderful care from Dr. Aggarwall and his staff and the Genesis Hospice.
