Merle Norwin Porth
(October 21, 1927 - July 20, 2010)

Mr. Merle N. Porth, 82, DeWitt, died Tuesday afternoon, July 20, 2010 at Wheatland Manor.

Mr. Porth was born October 21, 1927 on the family farm at rural Calamus where he lived and worked until moving to DeWitt, in 1998. Merle was the son of Norwin and Vanda (Hamdorf) Porth. He graduated from Calamus High School in 1945. Merle was united in marriage to Margaret “Rusty” Bossert in 1950 and the couple enjoyed 60 years of marriage.

He was a longtime member of Faith Lutheran Church, Calamus. Merle loved to fish and enjoyed a lifelong love of baseball. He was an avid Cubs fan, and was always watching the schedule for the next Cubs Game to begin. He enjoyed family time, his friends and had an excellent sense of humor. Merle was always able to laugh with others and at himself.

Surviving are his wife, Margaret "Rusty"; children, Steven (Janice), Franklin, Tennessee; Rebecca Thomas, Rodeo, California; Thomas (Maureen), Waterloo, and Barbara (Ralph) Nunn, Big Canoe, Georgia; grandchildren, Eric, Ryan, Anne, Madison, Robert, Mindy and Casey; four great-grandchildren; a sister, Joan (Oscar) Shelton.

Preceding Merle in death were his parents.

Family and friends may visit at Schultz Funeral Home, DeWitt, from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m. Friday, July 23, 2010. A Service of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 24, 2010 in Faith Lutheran Church, Calamus with the Rev. Sarah E. Kretzmann officiating. Burial will follow at Evergreen Cemetery, Grand Mound. In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, a memorial fund has been established to benefit Calamus-Wheatland Schools.
