Elizabeth L. (Betty) Monahan, 84, of Clinton, died Friday, April 9, 2010 at The Alverno.

Mass of the Christian Burial will be 10:30am, Wednesday, April 14, 2010 at the Sacred Heart Chapel Prince of Peace Parish. Burial will follow in the St. Ireneaus Calvary Cemetery. Betty was born on August 9, 1925 in Clinton, Iowa, the daughter of James and Mary (Carew) Shanahan. She married Joseph L. Monahan, Jr., on August 12, 1948 in Clinton, Iowa; he died April 28, 2004.

Betty was a graduate of Clinton High School. She was employed at the Clinton High School Athletic Department secretary. She also worked at the Milo John Drug Store and for Judge Halbach, Sr.

Betty and her husband moved to Omaha in 1950 so Joe could attend medical school and serve his residency.

In 1958, Betty and Joe and their family of three children returned to Clinton. Betty worked as her husband’s receptionist in his newly opened medical office.

Whether it applied to her husband, her children, or grandchildren Betty’s consistent philosophy of education could be summarized by one of her favorite phrases “school comes first.”

Her family, friends, and The Alverno staff appreciated Betty for her uncanny use of few pointed words but expressions that spoke volumes.

Betty’s family would like to express their gratitude to The Alverno staff who for the last 20 years provided unmatched quality of care. The Alverno staff cared for Mom as one of their own.

Betty is survived by two daughters: Patricia A. (Trish) Monahan and her husband William J. (Bill) Lane, III of Sioux City, Iowa and Maureen F. Monahan and her husband Jonathan I. Arons of San Francisco, California; son: Dr. Joseph L. Monahan, III of Clinton; three grandchildren: Kelly Marie Monahan, William Jennings (Bill) Lane, IV, and Max Joseph Monahan Arons.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, three brothers, and four sisters.

Betty was a member of Prince of Peace Parish. She enjoyed watching the Chicago Cubs and spending time on the river.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers that memorials be made to The Alverno.
