One of the Pioneer Settlers of Iowa Laid to Rest

Michael P. Welch, aged 92, was born in Ireland in 1827, and came to this country when only a boy and with his parents settled in Clinton County, Iowa in the early days, being one of the pioneer settlers of Iowa and for many years made his home near Lost Nation and in his younger days he was a prosperous farmer and by his industry and honesty, he succeeded in gaining his share of this world’s goods. He was a firm believer in the Catholic Church, which belief he adhered to his last days. The deceased was never married, living with his mother until her death, and then always alone. The last few years his health was failing and was taken care of in a home for old people in Dubuque, Iowa, where he died April 8, 1919. The remains were taken to Lost Nation Wednesday morning where high mass was said and after which the remains were taken to Vinton, Iowa and laid beside the remains of his mother. He is survived by one brother, William Welch.
