Bernie Reid 08/13/2001 DEWITT, Iowa -- Service of Christian Burial for Bernie A. Reid, DeWitt, will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, at Grace Lutheran Church, DeWitt. The Rev. Galen Drawbaugh will officiate. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery, DeWitt, where the Eugene McManus American Legion Post of DeWitt will conduct military rites. Pallbearers will be Anthony Sinclair, Jonathan Sinclair, Beau Reid, Michael Reid, Adam Reid, and Paul Reid. Visitation is 3-8 p.m. Tuesday at Schultz Funeral Home, DeWitt. Mr Reid died Saturday Aug. 11, 2001, at Westwing Place, DeWitt. Mr. Reid was born March 8, 1925, in Wasola, Mo., to Percy and Maude (Johnson) Reid. He served his country in the Army during World War II. On May 10, 1947, Bernie was united in marriage to Verlene Hathcock in Mountain Home, Ark. The couple moved to Dewitt in 1948 where Bernie farmed until his retirement. He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, DeWitt, and the DeWitt American Legion Eugene McManus Post. Bernie loved Grace Camp and the time he spent with his grandchildren. He enjoyed bowling and his boat trips, where he was a disciplined slot machine player. In lieu of other expressions of sympathy, memorials may be made to Grace Lutheran Camp. Survivors include his loving wife of 54 years, Verlene; sons and daughters-in-law, Mike and Sandi Reid, Atlanta, Dennis and Kristy Reid, Fort Madison, and Robert and Kim Reid, Palmyra, Va.; a daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Doug Sinclair, Anchorage, Alaska; nine grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a brother, Roscoe (Virginia) Reid, Kansas City, Mo. Bernie was preceded in death by a son, John, during the Vietnam War; his parents; a brother, Russell; and sisters, Zelma Daniels and Roxie Reid.
