DEWITT — Mr. Clarence H. Matzen, 91, DeWitt, died Sunday afternoon, August 2, 2009, at Genesis Medical Center-DeWitt. Clarence Henry Matzen was born September 6, 1917, near Princeton, Iowa, to Henry and Anna (Stoltenberg) Matzen. He served five years in the Army during World War II. Clarence married Eleanor Grau, July 7, 1942. They farmed at rural Calamus for 45 years until moving to DeWitt and retiring in 1990. Clarence was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Grand Mound, and the Calamus American Legion Post. He was a farmer at heart and enjoyed sports, playing cards and the grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Surviving are his loving wife of 67 years, Eleanor; children, Ron Matzen and his wife, Lois, DeWitt, and Nancy Johansen and her husband, Bruce, Coralville; grandchildren, Richard and Julie Matzen, Terry and Keri Matzen, Jennifer and Aaron Davenport, Chris and Jackie Johansen; great-grandchildren, Andrew Matzen, Alex Matzen, Marisa Matzen, Tyler Matzen, Tanner Johansen, Olivia Davenport, Gavin Johansen and Cooper Davenport; sisters, Irene Krambeck and Jeanette (Ron) Stoltenberg, Davenport. Preceding Clarence in death were his parents; a great-granddaughter, Sadie Johansen; brothers, Lester and Marvin Matzen; and a sister, Vivian Schwarz. Family and friends may visit at Schultz Funeral Home, DeWitt, from 3:00 until 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, August 5, 2009. A Service of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, August 6, 2009, in Immanuel Lutheran Church, Grand Mound. The Rev. Arthur Rickman will officiate with burial to follow at Evergreen Cemetery, Grand Mound. Military rites by the Magnus M. Petersen American Legion Post #466 will be conducted at graveside. Pallbearers will be Richard Matzen, Terry Matzen, Andrew Matzen, Alex Matzen, Chris Johansen and Aaron Davenport.
