Norbert J. Palzkill (May 11, 1931 - July 29, 2009) DEWITT — Norbert J. Palzkill, 78, of DeWitt, Iowa, passed away, Wednesday, July 29, 2009, at his home, surrounded by family. Services will be at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, August 3, 2009, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in DeWitt. Friends may call from 3:00 - 7:00 p.m. on Sunday at St. Joseph's Church and from 9:00 until 10:45 on Monday morning at the church. The Knights of Columbus will have a rosary at 7:00 p.m. at the church Sunday evening. Norb was born May 11, 1931, in Mineral Point, Wisconsin. He was the son of John and Catherine (Rock) Palzkill. He married Myrna Klosterman on July 27, 1963, at St. Joseph's Church in Dodgeville. Norb served in the U.S. Navy, graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Platteville in 1961 and spent 34 years with the Department of Army as a civil service employee in Joliet and Rock Island, Illinois. Upon his retirement, he secured employment with Clinton County, Iowa. Norb was a member of the Knights of Columbus, being an active member of Council Number 959 in DeWitt. He was also a member of the American Legion Eugene McManus Post 238 in DeWitt. He worked hard at Legion Bingo and loved to help with the Avenue of Flags at St. Joseph's Cemetery. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, members of the American Legion will be presenting military honors at the cemetery. Norb enjoyed gardening everywhere he could, traveling to visit family, friends and relatives no matter where they lived, and most recently he became very interested in researching his ancestral genealogy. Surviving are his wife, Myrna; seven children, Jacqueline (Gayln) Reuter of DeWitt; Cynthia (Tim) Bartos of Broken Arrow, OK; Jeffrey Palzkill of DeWitt; Lori Palzkill of DeWitt; James (Leslie) Palzkill of DeWitt; Craig (Amy) Palzkill of Byron, Illinois; and Stacy (Shawn) Sands, of Lee Summitt, Missouri. Norb is also survived by five grandchildren, Dylan and Hannah Palzkill of DeWitt; and Ian, Ethan and Jaden Palzkill of Byron, Illinois. He is also survived by five sisters, Dorothy (Jim) Dodds of Dubuque, Iowa; Mary (Merlyn) Nihles of Mineral Point, Wisconsin; Helen (LaVerne) Schmitz of Mineral Point; Patricia Bemus of Madison, Wisconsin; and Catherine (Fred) Oomens, of Platteville, Wisconsin; and one brother, Gene Palzkill of Mineral Point, Wisconsin. Norb is survived by his father-in-law, Lloyd Klosterman, many other brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nephews, nieces, cousins and many close friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister-in-law, Jacqueline Palzkill and brothers-in-law, Dale Carey, Robert Stromer and Vic Bemus. Norb's family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the medical staff and nurses and hospice personnel in DeWitt and Davenport for their special attention to Norb and his family. The family is especially grateful to Norb's brother, sisters, all the close friends and neighbors who have helped Norb through this most difficult time.
