Dec. 21, 1923, THE ST. HELENA ECHO.

Last Tuesday [Nov. 27, 1923] the Angel of Death came and called R. E. Beatty to his eternal home. He was born on board a ship on the Gulf of Mexico, March 3, 1842, while his parents, emigrants from Ireland were enroute to this country. He was reared in Clinton, Iowa. He enlisted in the Union navy at the outbreak of the Civil War, serving during the war in Admiral Farragut's fleet. He saw service at Fort Jackson, New Orleans, Vicksburg, and Port Hudson, besides minor engagements.

He afterwards married Mrs. Johanna Gray, nee Ward, of which union two children were born, R. T. Beatty, deceased, and Mrs. J. I. Phillips.

He made his home in St. Helena Parish, living an open, just and sincere life. He died after an illness of three weeks, despite efforts of Dr. W. B. Travis, relatives and friends.

He was buried in Tangipahoa Cemetery under the auspices of the Roman Catholic Church of which he was a life long member.
