CLINTON — Velma W. Burt, 91, of Clinton, IA, passed away at home on Wednesday, May 13, 2009. Visitation will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. on Friday, May 15, 2009, at Chancy Lutheran Church. Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. following the visitation at Chancy Lutheran Church with Pastor Fred Schauer officiating. Burial will be in the Andrew Cemetery in Andrew, IA. Lemke Funeral Homes, North Chapel, assisted the family with funeral arrangements. Velma Burt was born May 22, 1917, in rural Jackson County to Frank and Esther Seiler. She married Albert Burt September 19,1940, in Des Moines, IA. She graduated from Andrew High School, Mt. St. Clare College, Mary Crest College and State University of Iowa. After teaching 10 years in rural schools, she taught 20 years at Kirkwood in Clinton and 5 years at Jefferson, retiring in 1983. She was a charter member of Chancy Lutheran Church, a life member of the National Education Association and a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society. Survivors include a son, Laverne C. Burt of Gorham, Maine; a grandson, Richard (Sarah); great-granddaughter, Laura of Gorham, Maine; and special friends, Jess and Judy McGilvrey of Clinton, IA. She was preceded in death by an infant son in 1941; her husband, Albert, in 1986; her brother, Elmer Seiler in 2003; and special friend, Robert Sorenson 2008.
