DEWITT — Mr. Vernon H. Becker, 87, DeWitt, died Thursday evening, May 14, 2009 at Westwing Place, DeWitt. Vernon Henry Becker was born July 26, 1921 south of Lost Nation, Iowa, to Walter and Mary (Karanda) Becker. Vernon farmed in his early years and later was a union carpenter. He married Dorothy Wolfe, August 22, 1942. Vern later married Ruby Spicer October 7, 1977 and she preceded him in death in August of 2006. He greatly enjoyed woodworking, gardening, farming and spending time with his family. Surviving are his children, Neal (Sue) Becker, Davenport, Kevin (Vicki) Becker, DeWitt, Roger (Donna) Becker, New Hampton, and Janet (Dean) Swiston, Stevens Point, Wisconsin; 11 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren; stepchildren, Karen Thorpe, Cedar Rapids, Sue Spicer, Racine, Wisconsin, Diane Spicer, Bloomington, Indiana, Richard Spicer, Sherman, Texas, Linda Knudsen, Bloomington, Indiana; six step-grandchildren, eight stepgreat-grandchildren; three sisters, Edith (Stuart) Ireland, Wyoming, Iowa, Betty Scott, Maquoketa, and Mary Ellen Flagel, California. In addition to his wife, Ruby, Vern was preceded in death by two infant sons, Paul Howard and Don Allen; a grandson, Kandon, and his parents. The family will receive relatives and friends at Schultz Funeral Home, DeWitt, from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, May 22, 2009. A Service of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 23, 2009, in Grace Lutheran Church, DeWitt. The Rev. Timothy Carr will officiate assisted by Youth Minister Landon Becker, Vernon's grandson. Burial will follow at Smithtown Cemetery.
