DELMAR — Valeta L. Schmidt, 84, of Delmar, Iowa, died Sunday, April 5, 2009, at Westwing Place in DeWitt. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, April 8, 2009, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Delmar, with the Rev. David Brownfield officiating. Burial will be in St. Patrick's Cemetery, Delmar, Iowa. Friends may call from 3 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Lahey Funeral Home in Maquoketa where the Catholic Daughters will have a rosary at 6:30 p.m. Memorials are preferred. Valeta Loretta Heiar was born January 13, 1925, in rural Bellevue Township, daughter of Nick and Clara (Yoerger) Heiar. She attended rural Jackson County schools. She married Ronald John Schmidt on February 10, 1943, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Bellevue, Iowa. She was a homemaker and farmed with her husband. She also worked as a custodian at Delmar School for 13 years, retiring in 1985. She was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church and the Over 60 Club in Delmar, and a member of the Catholic Daughters of America Court St. Raphael 1156, Maquoketa, for over 50 years. She enjoyed sewing and embroidery, and liked to play cards with her family and friends. She is survived by her husband, Ronald Schmidt of Delmar; 5 children, Donald (Rita) Schmidt of DeWitt, Marjorie (Walter) Scott-Craig of Davenport, Judy (Wesley) Bare of Seattle, Washington, Linda (Dave) Schachterle of Cedar Falls, and Denise (Steve) Twohig of Boise, Idaho; 12 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren; 2 sisters, Evelyn (Don) Neubert and Verna Mae (Raymond) Ernst, and one brother, Allen (Ruth) Heiar, all of Bellevue. She was preceded in death by her parents, one sister, Marilyn Haxmeier, and one brother, Richard in WWII in 1942.
