PRESTON — Roland A. Flemming, age 89, of Sabula, Iowa, formerly of rural Miles, died Monday, October, 13, 2008, at the Alverno Health Care Center in Clinton, Iowa. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, October 17, 2008, at the Miller-Law-Jones Funeral Home in Preston, Iowa. Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, October 16, also at the Miller-Law-Jones Funeral Home in Preston. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery in Sabula, Iowa. A memorial has been established in Roland’s memory. Online condolences and memorial tributes may be given to the family at www.lawjonesfuneralhome.com.Roland Albert Flemming was born January 23, 1919, in rural Miles, Iowa, the son of Henry and Bertha (Ketelsen) Flemming II, and grew up on the family farm. He graduated from Miles High School in 1936. Roland married Beatrice Rogers on July 27, 1942, in Missouri. Together they lived most of their lives in Sabula. Beatrice preceded him in death on December 10, 1994. Roland served in World War II as an Army Tech Sergeant in the Panama Canal Zone. He worked at Dupont in Clinton for thirty-six years. Roland was a member of the Sabula V.F.W. and American Legion. He enjoyed listening to periodicals on tape from the Library Service for the Blind and Handicapped. His favorite magazine was Popular Science and also listened to Newsweek. Roland is survived by one daughter, Ronda (Jim) Taplin of rural Sabula; one son, Ronald Flemming of Sabula; five grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, two stepgreat-grandchildren; one brother, Robert (LeVora) Flemming of Miles; and numerous brothers- and sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews. Roland was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Beatrice; and one brother, Burton Flemming.Death date: Oct. 13, 2008
