CALAMUS — Wallace “Wally” St. John, 81, Calamus, passed away, Monday, September 15, 2008, at Genesis Medical Center East Campus, Davenport, Iowa. He was born October 22, 1926, in Toronto, Iowa, the son of Herbert and Mina Davisson St. John. On September 30, 1951, Wally married Vera Keister at First Lutheran Church in Maquoketa, Iowa. Wally was a World War II Navy Veteran and was very active in the Magnus M. Petersen American Legion Post #466, Calamus. He held various positions including past District, County and Post Commander. In his early years, he worked at Weaver Construction. He later worked as an equipment operator for Clinton County with the Roads Department for 27 years, retiring in March, 1989. Wally was a member of Faith Lutheran Church and a loyal Chicago Cubs fan. He enjoyed his kids and grandkids.Surviving are his wife, Vera; children and their spouses, Arnold (Carol) St. John, DeWitt, Dean (Kim) St. John, Durham, North Carolina, and Jean (Daniel) Vander Heiden, Wheatland, Iowa; 8 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Roger; and brother, Roy St. John. Funeral services will be 10:30 on Thursday, September 18, 2008, at Faith Lutheran Church, Calamus, Iowa. The Rev. Sarah Kretzmann will officiate. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery, Calamus. Military rites will be held at graveside. Pallbearers will be Gary Ihrig, Michael Babcock, Ronald Babcock, Mark Tiedt, Joshua Angus and Justin St. John. Visitation will be 3:00 until 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday at Schultz Funeral Home, Grand Mound. Online condolences may be left at www.schultzfuneralhomes.com.Death date: Sept. 15, 2008
