SAVANNA, Ill. — Gerald Herbert Smith, age 86, of Savanna, IL, passed away on Saturday, September 13, 2008, at the University of Iowa Hospital, Iowa City, IA.In accordance with his wishes, his body has been cremated. There will be no services and interment will take place at the National Cemetery, Arsenal Island, Rock Island, IL. Hodgson Funeral Home, Rock Island, is assisting the family.Gerald was born on April 8, 1922, in Clinton, Iowa, the son of Herbert E. and Gertie E. Brake Smith.Mr. Smith had graduated from Miles Consolidated High School in Miles, IA. He was employed at the Savanna Ordnance Depot as a receiving and shipping checker prior to his entry in the Army where he was a radio operator. He was later employed as a truck driver. Gerald was of the Protestant faith. He is survived by his sisters, Jean Quast, Rock Island, IL, and Marjorie (Thomas) Woods, Columbia, S.C.; and a brother, Stanley (Linda) Smith of Rock Island, IL.He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Catherine Spangler.Death date: Sept. 13, 2008
