Dennis Barr
1941 - 2002Dennis R. Barr, 61, rural DeWitt, died suddenly Wednesday afternoon, Dec. 4, 2002, at DeWitt Community Hospital.
Dennis Reo Barr, the son of Clarence J. Barr and Anna Schlemmer Barr, was born April 13, 1941, in Clinton. He was a 1959 graduate of DeWitt High School. On June 19, 1960, Dennis married Ardith Crosthwaite at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Grand Mound.
He farmed in rural DeWitt for 35 years, and in 1971 established Barr Sales and Service Inc., a snowmobile, ATV and watercraft dealer of rural DeWitt.
Dennis loved his family and nature, and enjoyed his grandchildren, camping, fishing, snowmobiling, and boating. His other hobbies included driving his horse teams and flying his airplane. He was a member of the Iowa State and Eastern Iowa Snowmobile Associations, of which he held various offices.
While farming he was a member of Farm Bureau, Cattlemen, and Pork Producers. Dennis was also a member of Grace Lutheran Church, DeWitt.
Surviving are his loving wife of 42 years, Ardith; two daughters, Denise Wagner and her husband, Michael, and Danette LaBarge and her husband, Randy, DeWitt; a daughter-in-law, Robyn (Barr) Kettler, Fulton, Ill.; a brother, Dale Barr, and his wife, Lois, Sun Lake, Ariz.; a sister, Delphi Fletcher, Westchester, Ill.; his mother-in-law, Dorothy Crosthwaite, Grand Mound; six grandchildren whom he loved dearly, Justin Wagner, Dennis Barr, Devin Wagner, Brittney Hughes, Kayla Wagner, and Shawn LaBarge; nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
Family and friends visited at Schultz Funeral Home, 722 8th Street, DeWitt, from 2-8 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 7. Service of Christian Burial will be 2 p.m. today at Grace Lutheran Church, DeWitt, with the Rev. Keith Speaks officiating. Interment will be in Elmwood Cemetery, DeWitt.
Pallbearers will be Tom Hahn, Steve Niemann, Larry May, Geoff Wilken, Dan Klatt, Bill Fatchett, Dan "Captain" Miller, and Gary Carstensen. Dennis’ grandchildren will serve as honorary pallbearers.
A memorial fund has been established.
