Peters, Vernetta View/Sign Guest Book

CLINTON — Vernetta Peters age 94 of Clinton, died Thursday, May 1, 2008 in her home at Prairie Hills in Clinton. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Saturday, May 3rd at St. John Lutheran Church in Clinton. The Rev. Wayne Brinkmann will officiate. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 8:00 P.M. Friday at the Pape Funeral Home and from 9:30 A.M. until the service time Saturday at the church. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery. Casket bearers will be her grandchildren and Mert Schepler, Jack Tietjens and Bryce Petersen. Vernetta was born on September 12, 1913, at the family home at Elk River Junction, the daughter of Henry and Eleanora Eickert Schepler. She was educated at Atwood #11 country school and attended Lyons High School. Vernetta married her high school sweetheart, Leonard L. Peters, on January 15, 1936, at the St. John parsonage in Clinton. Vernetta won Leonard over with her fried eggs, as the walk from his farm to hers made him hungry. Leonard died on November 18, 2005. Vernetta and Leonard farmed south of Andover until retiring in 1975. They recently sold the home to their granddaughter and her fiancé. Vernetta was a member of St. John Lutheran Church, the Sewing Circle and the Ladies Aid Society. Vernetta enjoyed being with her family, traveling with her husband and friends, fishing and playing cards. She always had a large garden, canning the produce and also canning their chicken, beef and pork. Vernetta has passed her knowledge and love of cooking on to her family. She has taught her granddaughters how to bake yeast breads and rolls. Vernetta is survived by two daughters; Lavonne (Allen) Petersen of Goose Lake and Eileen (Lee) Nation of Spirit Lake, IA; a son Don L. (Pennie) Peters of Clinton; 8 grandchildren; Laurie (Jeff) Anderson, Jo Ellen (Travis) Ketelsen, Kristin (Ernest) Lueders, Jennifer Jungers, Nicole (Gary) Vogt, Mike Nation (Megan Simmons), Erica Peters (Josh Merchant), and Kyle Peters; 14 great grandchildren; Erick, Alyssa and Nicholas Anderson, Allen, Tyler and Ryan Ketelsen, Nathaniel and Samuel Lueders, Jacob, Jillian and Jennae Jungers and Emily, Alexis and Garrett Vogt and her brother, Harry (Jeanetta) Schepler of rural Clinton. Vernetta was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and a brother, LeRoy.Death date: May 1, 2008
