FULTON, Ill. — Dr. Alvin E. Housenga, 83, of 510 12th Ave., Fulton, IL, died Saturday, March 01, 2008, at Mercy Medical Center North, Clinton, IA. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 05, 2008, at Trinity Reformed Church in Fulton, IL, with the Rev. Tom Merchant, pastor of Trinity Reformed Church in Fulton, IL, officiating. Visitation will be from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, March 04, 2008, at the Fulton Chapel of the Bosma-Renkes Funeral Home, Fulton, IL. Interment will be in Fulton Township Cemetery, Fulton, IL. Memorials may be made to Trinity Reformed Church, Fulton, IL, and The Gideons. He was born March 21, 1924, in Fulton, IL, to Garrett and Tena (Buikema) Houzenga. He attended rural Whiteside County grade schools and graduated from Morrison High School in 1942. He attended Scovill Business School in Clinton, IA, and Sterling, IL. He graduated from Chicago College Optometry, Chicago, IL, in 1950, where he was a member of the Phi Theta Upsilon college fraternity. He never married.He worked as an optometrist working in Morrison, IL, Chicago, IL, San Francisco, CA, Galesburg, IL, and Moline, IL. He was a member of Trinity Reformed Church, Fulton, IL, and Trinity Men’s League, Fulton, IL. He was a member of Fulton American Legion Post 402. He was a Gideon and a member of the Carroll-Whiteside Camp. He was a veteran of World War II from 1944 and 1946, serving in the U.S. Army in the 125th Evacuation Hospital (SM), where he received the Good Conduct Medal and the Army Commendation Ribbon. Survivors include one sister, Mrs. Leota M. Laughlin, Aurora, CO; one sister-in-law, Mrs. Mary Lou Houzenga of Thomson, Ill.; and several nieces, nephews and grandnieces and nephews.To send online condolences go to www.bosmarenkes.com.
