PRINCETON, Iowa — Kurt Allen Spies, 27, Princeton, Iowa, died Sunday afternoon, January 27, 2008. Kurt was born January 14, 1981, in Iowa City, Iowa. He was the son of Tina Marie (Otte) and Donald Lee Spies. Kurt was 1999 graduate of North Scott High School. He farmed with his grandparents, Karl and Martha Otte. He worked for area farmers and for the past three years went on wheat harvest. He greatly enjoyed his work this past summer with Strunk Custom Harvesting of Silver Lake, Kansas. Kurt looked forward to working with them this summer and also was planning to travel to Australia to do harvesting as well. He enjoyed NASCAR, was an avid Vikings fan and loved socializing with friends and anything to do with farming, especially combining. Surviving are his mom, Tina Spies; his dad, Donald Spies; a sister, Kristel Spies, Davenport; a half sister, Amanda Spies, Ventura, California; grandparents, Karl and Martha Otte, Princeton; aunts and uncles, Allen and Donna Spies, Goose Lake, Steven and Marlene Otte, North English, Iowa, Patrick and Eva Otte, Ladora, Iowa, Gina and Donnie Bown, State Center, Iowa, Karl, Jr. and Amy Otte, McCausland, Iowa, and Heidi Otte, Princeton; numerous cousins and friends. Preceding Kurt in death were his grandparents, Ed and Doris Spies; great-grandparents, Adolf and Margaretha Otte and Ben and Elsie Beitel; as well as an aunt, Ginger Spies. The family will receive relatives and friends from 4:00 until 8:00 p.m. Friday, February 1, 2008, at Schultz Funeral Home, DeWitt. A funeral service will be held at 12:00 noon Saturday, February 2, 2008, in the funeral home chapel. The Rev. C.H. Meyer will officiate. Burial will follow in McCausland Cemetery. A memorial fund has been established for the organizations that assisted in the search and recovery effort. Pallbearers will be Steven Otte, Patrick Otte, Karl Otte Jr., Lucas Otte, Frank Thorton Daniel Ion and Tom Claussen.
