CLINTON — Earl C. Schluns, age 84, of Clinton, died Monday, December 17, 2007, at his home. A Mass of the Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, December 22nd, at Prince of Peace Parish, Sacred Heart Church with the Rev. Anthony Herold officiating. Visitation will be from 2:00 to 8:00 p.m. Friday at the Pape Funeral Home where a vigil service will held at 2:30 p.m. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery. Casket bearers will be his sons Marty, Don, Leonard, Rob and John Schluns and his nephew, Tom Smith. Memorials may be made to the Prince of Peace Building Fund. Earl was born on February 14, 1924, in Miles, Iowa, to Fredrick and Harriet Pardee Schluns. Earl served with the U. S. Marine Corps from 1942 to 1946. He served in the Pacific Theater with the Devil Dog’s in the battle for Iwo Jima and Volcano Island. Earl married Bernice E. Leonard on September 10, 1947, at Sacred Heart Church in Clinton. He was employed at E.I. DuPont Company for 37 years, retiring in 1982. Earl was a member of Prince of Peace Parish. He and his wife, Bernice, were world wide travelers. For the past 14 years, they wintered in Florida. Earl enjoyed hunting and volunteering his construction talents. Earl is survived by his wife, Bernice, of 60 years; 17 children, Linda (Charles) Dietterich of Benson, NC, Patricia (William) Kitchen of Katy, TX, Mary (Allen) Crider of Camanche, Jane (Tim) Carolus of Brazoria, TX, Ann White of Camanche, LaVonne (Marvin) Thompson of Clinton, Maureen (Michael) Voss of Broomfield, CO, Teresa (Steven) Whealon of Omaha, NE, Martin (Gail) Schluns of Washington, WV, Donald (Clare) Schluns of Tukwila, WA, Leonard (Kimberly) Schluns of Pearland, TX, Robert (Doreen) Schluns of Roscoe, IL, Julie (Randy) DeValois of Thornton, CO, Kathleen (Chris) Watt of Bellingham, WA, Lisa (Steven) Luft of West Des Moines, IA, Janine (Joel) DeVries of Anamosa, IA, and John Schluns of Clinton; 45 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Lois (Edgar) Persons of Kinsington, MN, and LaVonne Urbaniak of Pioneer, CA. Earl was preceded in death by his parents, a grandson, Jonathan Kitchen, a brother, Walter (Paul), and a sister, Velma Carrier. Death date: Dec. 17, 2007
