Soenksen, Esther Louise Licht

DEWITT — Mrs. Esther Louise Licht Soenksen, 100, DeWitt, Iowa, died Thursday morning, November 8, 2007, at Amber Ridge Assisted Living, DeWitt.

Esther was born July 10, 1907, to Henry and Anna Hein Licht in rural Lowden, Iowa. She married Edwin Johannes Soenksen November 26, 1931, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Lowden. Together with her husband, they built and operated the Winsther Motel in DeWitt. Esther was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church and Grace Prayer Warriors. She had been involved in the past years as a Sunday school teacher, Ladies Aid member, the Altar Guild, Grace World Relief Quilters and had been a member of the choir and hand bell choir. She was active in knitting baby blankets and hats for Genesis Medical Center’s nursery. Esther had been an active member of the Towers Bible Class. She also enjoyed playing the organ and violin, baking and sharing her baked goods with others.

Survivors include her daughters, Hazel Laine (John) Carlucci, Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, Anne (Pastor Darvin) Herman, Greer, South Carolina, and Maria Casad, DeWitt, Iowa; nine grandchildren; and twenty seven great-grandchildren.

Preceding her in death was her husband, Edwin, her parents, two brothers and three sisters.

Friends may call at Schultz Funeral Home, DeWitt, from 2 until 6 p.m. Sunday, November 11, 2007. Service of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, November 12, 2007, in Grace Lutheran Church, DeWitt. The Rev. Timothy Carr officiating. Burial will follow at Elmwood Cemetery, DeWitt.
