Koebel, Helen D.

Helen D. Koebel, 85, passed away suddenly on October 27, 2007, at her home in Indianapolis. She was born in Clinton, Iowa, on November 25, 1921, to Michael and Elizabeth Dillon. She graduated from College with a Bachelor’s Degree in Education and taught school in Iowa. During World War II she worked for the Department of the Navy in Washington, D.C. She met her future husband, Thomas P. Koebel on a vacation to Mt. Washington, in New Hampshire, after the war. They settled in the Chicago area after their marriage. Their 42-year marriage was one of humor, memorable family vacations and festive parties with family and friends. Christmas was always a highlight of the year and the Christmas trees were infamous. After having raised her four daughters, Helen worked for Traveler’s Insurance in the Chicago area as a claims representative. Upon retirement, they settled in Indianapolis. She was a member of St. Pius X Catholic Church. Her strong belief of helping others was a top priority in Helen’s entire life. Even at the age of 85, she was still volunteering for St. Vincent’s Hospice and St. Vincent de Paul.

Helen was preceded in death by her beloved husband Thomas P. Koebel, and her cherished sister, Margaret Dillon.

She is survived by her four daughters who loved her dearly and were blessed to have such an amazing mother and role model. We will all miss her and can’t imagine life without her common sense, joy, and love of life. Margaret (Roland) Green of New South Wales, Australia, Karen (Mark) Schneider of Victoria, MD, Terry (Michael) Parrilli of Cary, IL and Nina (James) Meyer of Indianapolis. Her nine grandchildren were a constant joy in her life and she surrounded them with love, guidance, and encouragement to be their best. Grandchildren- David Green, Allison Green Ramadge, Nick and Stephanie Schneider, Matt and Lena Parrilli, Timothy, Dana, and Rachel Meyer.

Helen brought so much joy and happiness to all who knew her. She was a gracious hostess who loved to entertain and loved people. She was proud of her Irish heritage, had a strong faith in God, loved her family and friends, crossword puzzles, playing bridge, a good book, her flowers and a great meal.

Visitation will be Wednesday, October 31 at the Leppert Mortuary, Nora Chapel, Indianapolis starting at 3:30 to 7:00 p.m. A mass of Christian Burial will be at St. Pius Catholic Church, Thursday, November 1, at 11:00 a.m.
