The Advertiser Saturday February 3, 1923 p. 5 Claudius Collins Coan, president of the Clinton National Bank, committed suicide early this morning. As a result of mental derangement, the consequence, he physician states, of protracted suffering from an incurable disease with which he had been afflicted for the past three years, Mr. Coan shot himself. Coroner C.F. Kellogg announces that no inquest will be held. Mr. Coan was one of the oldest of Clinton bankers. During the past three years he had been gradually relinquishing his duties as president of the bank because of his physical condition. Eighteen months ago, when this condition, he abandoned his active duties. Fourteen months ago Mr. Coan underwent an operation which revealed the incurable nature of his malady, a disease which frequently brings about mental derangement from suffering. Since then he had devoted much of his time to travel and treatment, but to no avail. During recent weeks he had been confined to his home, under a physician's care. Private funeral services will be held at 2 o'clock Monday afternoon at the late home, 345 Seventh avenue. Burial will be in Springdale cemetery. Mr. Coan was born at Lodi, Seneca county, New York, on September 8, 1855. He received his education in this city and in Cornell university, New York. After the death of his father, William Folwell Coan, in 1886, he became cashier of the Clinton National bank. In 1896 he became president of the bank. The deceased was married to Edith Ernestine Nock of Rome, New York, on October 12, 1887. Mrs. Coan passed away on February 13, 1920. Immediate relatives who survive are two sisters, Mrs. Walter I. Hayes of this city and Mrs. Claudine C. Smith, now in Los Angeles. Mr. Coan was identified with a number of Clinton business institutions, and was a member of the Wapsipinicon club, the Clinton Country club, the local Masonic bodies, and the Chicago Athletic association.
