Dr. George William Marme

Visitation: 3 to 7 p.m. Friday at Nelson Funeral Home, DeWitt, with a prayer service at 7 p.m.

Services: 10 a.m. Nov. 25 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, DeWitt.

DEWITT — Dr. George William Marme, 85, of DeWitt, died Tuesday at Genesis Medical Center–DeWitt.

His body has been donated to University of Iowa Medical School.

He was born Feb. 19, 1921, in Peoria, Ill., to George P. and Mary Conn Marme. He married Joyce Williams Marme on June 5, 1948, at St. Cecilia’s Catholic Church, Peoria.

He attended Bradley and Yale universities. He graduated with a degree in medicine from Loyola University, Stritch School of Medicine, Chicago, in 1948.

He served with the U.S. Army during World War II and also was a captain with the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War.

He practiced medicine for 56 years before retiring in 1998. Of those 56 years, he spent the first 26 years in family practice with Dr. L.H. Schaefer in DeWitt. He then spent 30 years as a family practitioner at Medical Associates, Clinton.

Survivors include his wife; seven children, Dr. Michael (Susan) Marme of Brooklyn, N.Y., Dr. Christopher (Mamata) Marme of DeWitt, Ram Andrew Marme of DeWitt, Jeffrey Marme, Dr. Christine (Daniel) Thompson of State College, Pa., Dr. Michelle (William) Marme Power of Chicago and Jennifer (Thomas) Lowery of Rock Island, Ill.; four grandchildren; five sisters, Margaret (Bob) Eynatten of Treasure Island, Fla., Rheta (Jim) O’Loughlin of Minneapolis, Patricia (Jim) McGrath of Phoenix, Eleanor Marme of Jupiter, Fla., and Bernadine (Sal) Pisano of Peoria.

Memorials may be made to St. Joseph’s Education Foundation or Genesis Medical Center, both in DeWitt.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, one brother and a sister-in-law.
