The Clinton Herald Wednesday July 1, 1987 p. 14 Word has been received of the death of Mrs. H. Waldo (Elizabeth) Murphy, 85, of Tucson, formerly of Clinton, who died recently following an extended illness. There was a private funeral service. The former Elizabeth Curtis was a native of Clinton. She left Iowa while in her teens to attend a private finishing shcool for women in Massachusetts. In the 1920's, she returned to Iowa and won two women's state golf championships. She later moved to New York and worked at the Barbizon Plaza Hotel and for J. Walter Thompson Co, an advertising agency. She married H. Waldo Murphy in 1931. The couple lived in New York before moving to the Chicago area in 1936; then to Clinton in the early 1940's; and to Tucson in 1950. She was active in the Daughters of the American Revolution and other social and charitable clubs and organizations. Survivors include her husband; two sons, Lewis of Tuscon, Ariz., and Henry of Palm Springs, Fla.; three grandchildren; two great grandchildren; and a sister, Louis Curtis of Naples, Fla.
