CLINTON — Clifford C. Leary, 90, of Clinton, died Friday at the Alverno Health Care Facility.
Burial will be in the Clinton Lawn Cemetery.
He was born June 25, 1916, in Graettinger to Benjamin and Anna Luhmann Leary. He married Charlotte Lorraine Piersol on Dec. 25, 1939, in Worthington, Minn. She died in 2004.
He graduated from high school in Iowa Falls.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, from 1942 to 1945. He was in the 563rd Ordnance Company in the European Theater, attaining the rank of staff sergeant and fought in the Battle of the Bulge.
He was a long-time member of the Izaak Walton League and Moose Lodge, a third degree Mason, and a 60-plus year member of the American Legion. He also was a member of First United Methodist Church.
He served on the Clinton Board of Education from 1956 to 1962.
For many years he owned and operated a DX service station on Camanche Avenue. In 1962, he became the superintendent of buildings and grounds for Clinton schools, a position he held until his retirement in 1981. He was instrumental in the acquisition of land for Clinton Junior College. He also oversaw the construction of the original portion of the college, which opened at its new site in 1965.
Survivors include two daughters, Linda Leary and Jean Goers, both of Clinton; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two sisters, Ethel Bethel of Overland Park, Kan., and Arlene Benton of Des Moines; and many nephews and nieces.
Memorials may be made to the Alverno Health Care Facility or Genesis Hospice, Clinton.
He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, one brother, one sister and a nephew.
