MORRISON, Ill. — Donald H. Van Ormer, 94, of Morrison, died Thursday at Scripps Green Hospital, La Jolla, Calif.
Graveside services will be at 3:30 p.m. Thursday at Woodlawn Cemetery, Augusta, Ill. Interment will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Augusta.
He was born Dec. 28, 1911, in Huntsville, Ill., to Charles D. and Myrtle M. Pierce Van Ormer. He married Mary A. Roberts on Dec. 25, 1936, in Augusta. She died in 1987.
He was educated in Huntsville grade schools and was a 1930 graduate of Rushville High School. He received a bachelor’s degree in education from Western Illinois State Teacher’s College, master’s degree in education degree from the University of Illinois and did advanced degree work at the University of Colorado.
He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
He moved to Morrison in 1959 to serve as principal of Morrison High School. He was principal until his retirement in 1972. Prior to that time, he was a teacher, coach, principal and superintendent in the communities of Forrest, Leland, Varna, Camden and Hull, Ill. Following his retirement, he served as a part-time recruiter with the Morrison Institute of Technology.
He was a member and past chairman of the legislative committee of the Illinois High School Association. He was a member of Morrison United Methodist Church, Morrison Rotary Club, Morrison Dunlap Lodge 321 AF&AM, Valley of Moline, Ill., Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite and American Legion Morrison Post 328.
Survivors include one daughter, Diana L. Van Ormer of San Diego; one son, Donald E. (Gail) Van Ormer of Marion, Ill.; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
