BOONE — Dan J. Lawlor, 61, of Boone, died Wednesday at home.

Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. today at Pape Funeral Home, Clinton, where a rosary and a vigil service will be conducted at 8:30 p.m. Mass is at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Prince of Peace Parish, St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Burial will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery. Mass will be at St. Cecillia Parish, Ames, at 7:30 p.m. March 20.

Pallbearers will be James Golinvaux Jr., Scott Hulten, Chris McDonnell, Solomon Atherton, Kelly Wharff and Samuel Voss.

He was born June 9, 1944, in Clinton to Thomas Julius and Cora Lucille Powers Lawlor. He married Mary T. McGovern on Nov. 22, 1969, in Clinton. She died in 2003.

He attended St. Mary’s School, Clinton.

He enlisted in the U.S. Navy and was deployed to Vietnam. He ended his military career as chief petty officer on the U.S.S. Oriskany Aircraft Carrier off the coast of Hanoi.

He attended Clinton Community College and later graduated from Iowa State University in 1969. He also completed three years of veterinary medicine at Iowa State University.

He was a brakeman with the Chicago Northwestern Railroad for 15 years. He worked in sales with F.W. Means, Des Moines; Praxair Welding Supply (formerly R&R Welding Supply), Ames; and the Goodfeet Store, Urbandale. He and his wife also raised German shepherds for more than 20 years.

Survivors include one son, James Lawlor of Ames; one daughter, Jessie Lawlor of Boone; his mother, Cora “Boots” Lawlor of Clinton; two brothers, Joe Lawlor of Ames and John Lawlor of Mesa, Ariz.; 10 sisters, Michaele Golinvaux of Clinton, Mrs. Joanne (Russell) Luckritz of Clinton, Mrs. Susan (Rollie) Unger of Rock Falls, Ill., Diane Osburn of Nashville, Tenn., Mrs. Janeen (Robert) Naeve of Clinton, Lucia McDonnell of Clinton, Mrs. Mary (Shane) Villers of Salem, Ore., Catherine Atherton of Lodi, Calif., Mrs. Bernadette (Roger) Voss of Charlotte and Mona Weidman of Clinton; and 90 plus nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, wife and two sisters.
