2 October 1916 - The Clinton Advertiser
page 6A couple of Clinton women--one married, the other single--are charged with masquerading in men's clothing. They were stopped by Officer Henry Price Sunday evening at Fifth street and Fourth avenue. The police officer saw the two women who were acting suspiciously he thought. The policeman, however, had no idea they were women until he stopped them. Explanations followed, and the officer notified them to appear in police court at 9 o'clock this morning. The women did not show up this morning.
The practice is forbidden by the Iowa code and a city ordinance which says that any person appearing on the streets or in public places in apparel not belonging to his or her sex shall be guilty of a misdemeanor.
