The Clinton Age, Clinton, Iowa, July 23, 1880

Between half past ten and eleven o’clock Monday night a fire was discovered in the Camanche distillery. The alarm was raised and promptly responded to. But the efforts of the crowd of earnest workers were unavailing, and the distillery was soon a mass of ruins. The loss it estimated at fully $20,000, insured for $11,000. The distillery was property of Messrs. Rice of Camanche and Black of Iowa City. The work had just gotten started, again, after a brief lay-off caused by high water, and had run alright Monday. The origin of the fire is a mystery.
