McDevitt Family Poisoned

Clinton June 14-

Mr. and Mrs. William McDevitt, their family of four children, a hired man and a visitor at the McDevitt home are all said to be in serious condition from poisoning, which occurred near Elvira. Sometime during the middle of the forenoon the members of the family became very ill, developing symptoms of poisoning. The hired man was dispatched to Charlotte for a doctor. He had not covered one-half the distance when he was taken ill and was obliged to dismount and lay down by the roadside. When found later in the morning he was still conscious, though suffering greatly. He informed some of the residents of the locality of the state of affairs at the McDevitt farm and doctors were summoned from Charlotte and Low Moor. The man was taken into a neighboring house where he is being cared for. No word was received this afternoon of the condition of the unfortunates, but it is said that they are all perilously ill.
How the poisoning occurred is not known positively, but the theory is advanced that it existed in food taken at the morning meal.
