The seven children of Mr. and Mrs. Cyril DeVries who were removed from their home at 208 14th Ave. S. by order of the city health physician 10 days ago, have been permanently taken from their parents.
The youngsters, whose ages range from two weeks to 11 years, will remain in a foster home for the present. Juvenile Judge W.A. McCullough ruled Tuesday. He said he will decide later on their future.
The judge held a hearing Tuesday in which the seven children were defendants on a charge of being neglected and dependent, as provided for in Iowa law. No charges have been placed against the parents. Judge McCullough said he took into consideration the fact that the father has been steadily employed and has a take home pay of $78 per week, thus leaving, he said "no excuse for the conditions in the home where the children were living."
Witnesses, all of whom testified as to filthy and unsanitary condition of the home, included Dr. R. O. Emmons, the city health officer; Sgt. Jerry Eastman, Probation officer Robert Hunter, Mrs. Genevieve Meeker, county welfare worker, and Capt. Anderson of the Salvation Army. The parents also testified but had no excuse to offer for their way of living the judge said.
Plight of the children were discovered two weeks ago when two police officers answered an emergency call and delivered the youngest DeVries child in the home. Their report on the condition of the two room dwelling which was occupied by eight persons, four cats and two dogs, led to the court order which placed the children in a foster home.
The mother and new baby were taken to Mercy Hospital by city ambulance and the baby was later placed in the foster home when released from the hospital.
