Clinton Herald, May 27, 1930, P. 6
This afternoon at three o’clock the marriage of Miss Henrietta Gates, daughter of Mrs. Marvin J. Gates, to Laurence A. Murphy, son of Mr. and Mrs. T. A. Murphy of Rock Island, Ill., took place at Oakhurst, the family home of the bride. J. M. Duer, D. D., of the First Presbyterian church officiated. She was given in marriage by her brother, A. L. Gates.
The bride and bridegroom were unattended as they stepped quietly from the little group of the older relatives of the two families and took their place before the fireplace in the southern end of the long living room. Tall silver vases holding white peonies were at either side of the fireplace and the mantel was banked with the same perfect blossom, a background perfectly adapted to the simple ceremony. The bride wore a frock of printed crepe, black with sprigs of yellow and green flowers, embroidered linen jabot and cuffs and a close fitting black felt hat.
After the ceremony afternoon tea was served, the dining table covered with a cloth of Cluny lace, and centered by a green and gold vase of white and painted daisies.
Mr. and Mrs. Murphy left this afternoon for the east and will sail at seven o’clock the evening of May 30 on the S. S. France for a six weeks honeymoon in Europe. Returning to Moline, Ill., they will be home after July 20.
The bride is the daughter of Mrs. Marvin J. Gates, formerly of Cedar Rapids. She is the granddaughter of Artemus Lamb, one of the most outstanding citizens of Clinton in the generation preceding this, and a great granddaughter of Chancy Lamb who was one of the founders of the lumbering industry of the middle western states. She attended school at Westover, Conn.
Mr. Murphy attended Choate school in Connecticut and the State University of Iowa. He is the son of T. A. Murphy, one of the leading attorneys of the Tri-Cities, and is a great grandson of John Deere who founded the Moline Plow works and kindred industries. Mr. Murphy is assistant superintendent of the John Deere Plow company.
Attending from out of the city are A. L. Gates, president of the New York Trust company, Mrs. Gates and her mother, Mrs. H. P. Davison, all of Peacock Point, Long Island and New York city; Mr. and Mrs. T. A. Murphy of Rock Island, Mr. and Mrs. Edmund Cook of Davenport and Mrs. Carl Snyder of New York city. Mrs. Cook and Mrs. Snyder are sisters of Mr. Murphy.
