The Clinton Herald Thursday May 9, 1996 p. 11 The funeral will be 11 a.m. Friday at Schmitz Funeral Home for Verna N. Gaarde, 74, of 639 First Ave., who died Tuesday at her daughter's home in Quincy, Ill. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Burial will be in Clinton Lawn Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Matt Gray, Scott and Corey Gaarde, Terry Mort, Jim Jacobsen and Dale Dalton. She was born Jan. 28, 1922, in Fulton, Ill., to Clyde and Ruth Wulf Powell. She married Chester R. Gaarde, April 21, 1946. He died March 5, 1996. She had been employed with the American Legion, Bushe's Cafe in Fulton, and at DuPont Co. She was the owner of the Midway Tavern until her retirement in 1989. Survivors include a daughter Mrs. Ruth Ann (Dwaine) Gray of Quincy, Ill.; a son, Robert Gaarde of Westland, Mich.; five grandchildren; a great-grandchild; a stepgrandson; and four sisters, Anna Mort, Mrs. Hazel (Robert) Nixon and Mrs. Becky (Robert) Niles, all of Clinton, and Mrs. Carol (Herbert) Jacobsen of Goose Lake. She was preceded in death by three brothers. Death date: May 7, 1996.
