RIVER NEWS

A man named Clarke nearly lost his life by drowning just opposite of the city yesterday morning. He started from the Illinois shore with a small skiff loaded to the guards with stove wood. When he reached a point about two hundred yards from the Iowa shore above the Diamond Jo warehouse, the skiff suddenly filled with water and sank, leaving Clarke to struggle in the cold muddy water. Ed. Dolly, of the lifesaving crew at the warehouse, saw the accident, and hastened to Commodore Jenks’ boat house procured a skiff and went to the rescue of the unfortunate Clarke, who was nearly exhausted and about ready and go to the bottom when pulled aboard. The overturned skiff was secured, but Clarke’s wood “bobbed up serenely” now and then it floats calmly downstream.
