The Clinton Age, Clinton, Iowa, January 27, 1891

John Farmer narrowly escaped death yesterday afternoon by drowning. He went out on the ice to see how work was progressing on the new bridge and he carelessly stepped onto some thin ice and went down where the water was twenty feet deep. When he came to the surface one of the men employed on the bridge grabbed him by the forelock and pulled him out. John says it was the coldest and most sudden bath he ever took.
