The Clinton Age, Clinton, Iowa, July 9, 1880

A terrible and fatal accident, which resulted in the death of six persons, occurred near Bryant, Sunday afternoon. As Mr. H. Hanna, his wife and five children were attempting to cross a swollen stream, they, with the exception of Mrs. Hanna, who jumped from the wagon, were precipitated into the swift stream and drowned. Mrs. Hanna was obliged to stand and see her husband and children drawn down to death before her eyes, and she unable to assist them. Her screams soon brought assistance; the stream was dragged and the bodies of the father and four children were recovered. The stricken mother was wild with grief, and all efforts to console her were in vain.

The other body was recovered on Monday, and the funeral of the six victims occurred Tuesday. Mr. Hanna was a highly respected farmer, and his sudden death with that of his children, threw a gloom over the entire community.
