The Graduating Exercises

The Graduating Exercises at the High School in Lyons, Friday evening were largely attended in fact the Odeon was crowed full, and the room was all taken. The salutatory was given by Miss G. Tripp, who cordially welcomed the assembled friends and delivered an able address on the subject “Paint Me As I Am-Scars and All.”

The essay by Miss Bessie Patrick “The Shores of the Mediterranean,” was a well delivered and able production.

“The Journey of Life” by Miss Dora Krebs, was also a good essay and well received.

Miss Mary Manville read an essay entitled “Echoes of the Past,” which was received with much applause, and was a really meritorious production.

The Valedictorian Miss Jeanette Lyall was greeted with applause on her appearance. Her essay which was very ably written and well delivered one, had for its heading “Energy vs. Talent.” At the conclusion of her essay loud applause showed how well the audience appreciated the fair valedictorian efforts.

The exercises was materially enlivened with sweet music by several ladies and gentlemen of Lyons.

Prof. Smith delivered to the class the diplomas of graduation, and made a few remarks giving good advice to those young ladies who were just on the threshold of a new and to them comparatively strange world. He advised them to have a motive in life – to live as they know their mothers would like to have them live - live so as to make mankind wiser, nobler, and happier.

The exercises were closed with a benediction by Rev. Mr. Jeffries.
