Clinton, Iowa, January 6, 1900Team Drowned-A team of horses belonging to Ben Baldwin, a teamster employed on the new railroad, were drowned Friday afternoon in a deep pool of water on Jefferson Avenue. The driver backed his wagon to far down the bank, and the team was dragged into the water, which is said to be about 18 inches deep. The pool is formed inside an old quarry.
A boy names Nyquist narrowly escaped drowning in the same place yesterday. He was walking near the edge of the pool when the bank crumbled in, throwing him into the water. Some men who were standing near saw the accident, and hastened to the spot, succeeded in pulling him out. - Journal
