Jackson Sentinel, January 4, 1894

Davenport Leader:
The mother of "Farmer" Burns, the famous wrestler, lives at Big Rock. She does not take kindly to her son's occupation as she thinks he will injure his health and shorten his life by the exacting line of business he has chosen. She prefers he would return to his former mode of life-farming-and let others occupy the muscular field. By the way, Burns neither drinks, smokes nor chews, nor does he use tea or coffee, and it is believed does not swear, at least out loud. He used to think it fun, years ago, before he became a professional, to down the ambitious stalward young men who wished to try their strength with him and show their agility. The most active half dozen young men of the village today well know that you are poking fun at them if you ask if they all combined could not lay out the farmer. The only answer you get to your question is a chuckle with the remark that they know better than try, as most of them all had been there before, and got woefully left. Farmer Burns, when he visits the town can walk the streets unmolested.
