KETTENRING, Postmaster, De Witt; born in Lycoming Co., Penn., in 1836; his parents, Henry and Agnes Kettenring, removed to Scott Co., Iowa, in 1845; his mother died in 1846; his father died in Rock Island Co., Ill., in 1858; he entered the 8th Iowa Regt. of Inf. in 1861; enlisted as private; rose to Second, then to First Lieutenancy, and promoted to Captain of Co. B Dec. 7, 1864; participated in the battles of Shiloh, Jackson, Vicksburg, etc.; was slightly wounded at Vicksburg, and severely, in the arm, at Spanish Fort; was taken prisoner at Shiloh; was confined as prisoner at Tuscaloosa for thirty days; at Montgomery, Ala., the same length of time; then at Macon, Ga.; thence transferred to Libby Prison, where he was paroled October, 1862; discharged May, 1866. Married, in 1867, Eleanor Hender, a native of England; have three children-Frank, Fred and Carrie E. Was appointed Postmaster, April, 1878.
