John William Howes, our immigrate Howes forefather was born in London, England in 1826.
In 1837 at the age of eleven John sailed to the States.
He was first a resident of Chillicothe, Ohio and should be on the 1840 census at the age of fourteen.
In 1847, John was married to Margaret V. Saxton at Bourneville, Ross Co., Ohio. This family had eleven children between 1850 and 1875. The first child may have been Lucinda J. Howes, who was born at Bourneville, Ross Co., Ohio, but died in Clinton County, Iowa in 1854, Two years after the parent's migration from Ohio to Iowa in 1852.
All the following children we presume were born at DeWitt, Clinton County, Iowa.
Donna E. - 1852.
William R. - 1855.
Anna - 1858.
Charles L. - Dec.1859.
Mary - 1863.
Walter C. - 1865-1890.
Lenora R. - 1868.
Ella M. - 1873-1874.

Margaret V. Saxton was born in Ohio, probably Concord or Bourneville, Ross Co., Ohio in the year 1833. She preceded John's death, and was buried in the Old DeWitt cemetery in Clinton, Iowa in 1902.
John died at Valley Junction, Polk County, Iowa (close to Des Moines), in 1913. It is thought that John may have been visiting his Granddaughter Mrs. Leroy Pieffer at the time, as he was residing at the St. Joe Hotel in Valley Junction. The Pieffer's escorted his body back to Clinton, Iowa for burial on May 06, 1913.
In 1913, four of his children were still living. He had thirty-four Grandchildren and forty Great Grandchildren.
Pallbearers were; William & John Kennedy of Clinton, Clarence Quick of Davenport, William Carber of McCausland, and John & Joe Howes of DeWitt, who were Grandchildren.
