RT. REV. BISHOP HENNESSEY
Jackson Sentinel
February 13, 1879

The Rt. Rev. Bishop Hennessey has made the following changes in the appointment and location of priests: The Rev. J. F. McGauran, from Farley to Otter Creek; the Rev. J. B. Gaffney, from Otter Creek to Center Grove, Clinton county; the Rev. F. Brady, from Dewitt to Farley; the Rev. P. Burke, from New Hampton to Independence; the Rev. F. Gosker, from Independence to New Hampton; the Rev Mr. McLaughlin succeeds his brother in Clinton, leaving Sigourney to be supplied with a Catholic priest.

We learn that the Rev. J. B. Gaffney is well liked by all his parishioners, and that he is making many warm and fast friends in and about Charlotte. Father Gaffney was one of Maquoketa’s warmest supporters for the county seat, and during the time built the Catholic Church in this city. Had the congregation been larger there is no doubt but Father Gaffney would have been located here. Our citizens owe much to Father Gaffney for his labors in aiding to make Maquoketa the county seat. The Rev. F. McGauran, the new priest at Otter Creek, is highly spoken of by all, both in the church and out, as an exemplary Christian gentleman.
