JOHN SHAFF.
John Shaff, one of the most influential citizens and successful farmers of Camanche township, has spent his entire life in this county, his birth occurring September 4, 1851, on the farm where he still resides. He is a son of Herman B. Shaff, who is represented elsewhere in this work. Our subject passed his boyhood and youth upon the old homestead, and acquired his early education in the district schools near his home, later attending the State Normal School at Whitewater, Wisconsin.
As soon as old enough to be of any assistance Mr. Shaff commenced to aid his father in the operation of the farm, and has since followed the vocation of farming. In business affairs he is prompt, energetic and notably reliable, and generally carries forward to successful completion whatever he undertakes. He has, therefore, prospered, and in connection with his father now owns about fourteen hundred acres of fine farming land, one thousand acres of which is under a high state of cultivation. He has always made his home in the locality where he now resides, and it has been the scene of his labors.
Mr. Shaff, a veteran of the Civil war, was married June 11, 1873, to Miss Jennie Dripps, a resident of Folletts. They have become the parents of five children: Mary, who was graduated at the Clinton high school and is now the wife of R. H. Adams, a resident of that place; Robert, deceased; John O., who also attended the Clinton high school, and is now a student at the Agricultural College in Ames, Iowa; Heman, at home; and Walter, deceased.
In his social relations Mr. Shaff is a member of Camanche Lodge, No. 60, F. & A. M., and in politics is identified with the Republican party. Like his father, he commands the respect and confidence of all with whom he comes in contact, either in business or social life, and has a host of friends throughout the county.
