HOMER I. SMITH, who has achieved a secure position as one of the leaders at
the Clinton bar, was born in that city, and represents the third
generation of one of the most notable families in this section of Iowa.
He was born in Clinton July 7, 1890, son of Dr. George A. and M. Nettie
(Ireland) Smith, and grandson of John Henry Smith. The careers of both his
grandfather and father are given particular mention above.

Homer Ireland Smith was graduated from the Clinton High School in 1909 and
completed his professional preparation in the Law School of the University
of Iowa in 1916. He has practiced at Clinton steadily for twelve years,
except during the World war period. He was commissioned a first lieutenant
in the American air service and was attached to the Royal Flying Corps in
England. He was overseas from September, 1917, until December, 1918. While
in England he was on duty patrolling the coast. One of the interesting
books of the great conflict, War Birds, makes special mention of the company
with which he served.

After the war Mr. Smith resumed his law practice at Clinton and from 1919
to 1922, for two terms, served as deputy county attorney. He was municipal
judge of Clinton from 1922 to 1926. Judge Smith is a member of the bar
associations, belongs to the American Legion, the Kiwanis Club, the Clinton
Country Club and the Wapsipinicon Club.

He married in September, 1923, Miss Helen Marquis, daughter of Charles B.
and Byrd Marquis, of Clinton. Their two children are named Marquis I. and
David M.
